When Caesar returns to Rome from the wars a virtual dictator, Brutus and his republican friends resolve that his ambition must be curbed – which in Rome can mean only one thing: the great general must be assassinated. But once the deed is done, the idealistic conspirators must reckon with the forces of a new power bloc, led by Mark Antony and Caesar’s nephew Octavius. When their armies close at Philippi, will Caesar’s ghost be avenged?

Opposing dictatorship and republicanism, private virtue and mob violence, Shakespeare’s tense drama of high politics reveals the emotional currents that flow between men in power with themes that still resonate even today. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging, and Dominic Dromgoole’s impassioned interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s classic plays showcased “a rapport between the performers and the audience that feels genuinely magical” (Daily Telegraph).

Cleopatra, the alluring and fascinatingly ambiguous Queen of Egypt, has bewitched the great Mark Antony, soldier, campaigner and now one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire. When Antony quarrels with his fellow leaders and throws in his lot with Cleopatra, his infatuation threatens to split the Empire in two.

The third of our Roman Tragedies, Antony & Cleopatra picks up Antony’s story many years after Julius Caesar. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence.  The Globe’s 2014 envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout, and Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s Cleopatra ‘kisses the audience’ (Guardian) with her ‘magnetically humorous’ (Evening Standard) performance.

Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. One Antipholus is astonished by his foreign hospitality; the other enraged by the hostility of his home town. The Dromios, caught between the two, are soundly beaten for obeying all the wrong orders.

Basing his plot on a farce by Plautus, Shakespeare caps the mayhem of his Roman original to build up a hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare.

The final Globe On Screen film for 2015 brings the perfect light relief to close an epic season of war and tragedy. This sell-out production employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging and will have cinema audiences roaring with laughter as it crams in “more hilarious anarchy than you can shake a fish, cat or identity-confused servant at.” (London Theatre Guide).

Kenneth MacMillan's famous version of Shakespeare's romantic tragedy set to Prokofiev's magnificent score returns to open the 2015/16 Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season. This Romeo and Juliet is rich in the swaggering colour of Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations, but MacMillan's focus is always on the complex emotions of the young lovers - especially on Juliet as she journeys through the delirious happiness of first love to a shocked, adult perception of her fate. Juliet is one of the most coveted of all ballerina roles, and as MacMillan's ballet enters its 50th year it resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago.

Enjoy four short ballets in one evening with this quadruple programme from The Royal Ballet.

Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of Carmen. As well as choreographing the production, Acosta will dance the lead role.

Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann's thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in Viscera.

Debussy's evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins's Afternoon of a Faun, which depicts two ballet dancers as absorbed by their own reflections as they are attracted to each other.

George Balanchine's Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of Swan Lake for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.

Christmas simply wouldn't be Christmas without The Royal Ballet's classic production of The Nutcracker. Loosely based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, it opens with the Christmas festivities of little Clara and her family and progresses through a sequence of dreams and enchantments that take Clara on her magical journey to the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of the Sweets.

Peter Wright's enchanting production with its wondrously growing Christmas tree and a rousing battle between the villainous Mouse King and an army of toy soldiers, mines the colour of Tchaikovsky's score, retaining exquisite surviving fragments of the original Ivanov choreography, including the beautiful pas de deux for the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.

La traviata is regarded as one of Verdi's finest operas, and Richard Eyre's traditional staging, is one of The Royal Opera's most popular productions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, one of opera's greatest heroines, based on the reallife courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 aged just 23. In this revival, Violetta is sung by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva in her debut with The Royal Opera, following her successful appearance as Violetta at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Richard Jones and Antonio Pappano renew their creative collaboration with this new production of Musorgsky's historical masterpiece, here seen in its compact 1869 first version in seven scenes. The originality of the composer's vision of Pushkin's play about Tsar Boris Godunov - who reigned over Russia between 1598 and 1605 - was too much for the management of the Imperial Theatres, who demanded changes that were incorporated in the second version of the opera, in which Boris finally had its premiere in 1874.

Many commentators, nevertheless, prefer the integrity of the original, which makes few concessions to operatic conventions. Keenly awaited will be Bryn Terfel's assumption of the title role - one of the most complex characters in opera - while John Graham-Hall appears as the crafty Prince Shuisky and John Tomlinson as the vagabond monk Varlaam.

Giselle is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet's title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death.

For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright's production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty.

Lucia di Lammermoor tells the story of an ongoing feud between two families in 17th century Scotland that has terrible consequences for two young lovers... It contains what is undoubtedly one of opera's most poignant and gripping mad scenes, and is regarded as one of Donizetti's finest works.

The opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than a decade, so this new production by Katie Mitchell will be a particularly important and exciting event. The title role will be sung by Diana Damrau, an expert in the coloratura repertory, while American tenor Charles Castronovo takes on that of her secret lover, the reckless and passionate Edgardo.
